Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful on record, destroyed thousands of homes as it tracked across central Philippines before going on to strike Vietnam. Winds of more than 300km/h, flash flooding and landslides have left families without shelter, food and water. Thousands of people are feared dead in the Philippines.
The Australian Underwater Hockey community has a close relationship with our friends from the Philippines. Players from across Australia have attended tournaments in Manila over the past few years. This time last year more than a dozen players attended the post-tournament dive trip on the island of Coron. The island was devastated by the storm.
A fundraiser gathering was held at the the Great Northern Hotel in Carlton North on Saturday 16th of December 2013. About thirty players and friends dropped in for a meal or a drink. A total of $780 was raised and will be donated to the Red Cross’ Typhoon Haiyan Appeal.
Thank you to Tim Helm for donating a range of super delicious preserves for the raffle and to all of those that donated.
