Hobart to host CMAS Age Group UWH Championships

Hobart will play host to the 4th CMAS Age Group Underwater Hockey Championships from 13-22 July 2017

Team Lists for Australian U19 and U23

There was a buzz at The Hobart Aquatic Centre over last weekend as selections were held for the age group teams heading to New Zealand for the Trans Tasman Competition in July 2014.

This years selections were particularly exciting. In 2014 Australia will field all four age groups, with the first ever  selection of a U23 Women team to complete the set. The buzz in the air culminated in whiteboards full of arrows and courts full of enthusuatic players aiming to impress.

As always the event was excellently organised and facilitated. The weekend involved selectors, coaches, speakers and guest mentors providing the highest level of training, advice, critique and support for Australia’s next generation of underwater hockey players.

The excitement in Hobart was perhaps heightened by the omnipresent Aged Group Worlds in 2015. An event certainly in the minds of coaches and players involved in the weekend.

Thanks goes to all those who participated, and congratulations to those who made the teams.

More over, our junior’s are exposed to celebrity opportunities, like those experienced by Caleb Thomas, Perri Adkins and Tom Robinson at the recent National Championships held on the Gold Coast.

During the tournament, Caleb, Perri (captains of the QLD U15 team), and Tom (captain of the VIC U15 team) were interviewed by host of the TV show Totally Wild. In their poolside interviews, the three captains explained to Totally Wild viewers exactly how our crazy sport works, and why it’s so much fun!

Their interviews will contribute to Totally Wild’s ‘underwater hockey story’, which airs this Saturday, March 8th at 8am on channel 11. After this episode goes to air, it will then be available to watch online at: http://tenplay.com.au/channel-eleven/totally-wild

Steve Dunn wins AUF Beau Beere Award

Victorian Underwater Hockey stalwart Steve Dunn was recently announced as the 2013 recipient of the Australian Underwater Federation’s Beau Beere Award.

Named after a prominent sports administrator, the award is bestowed to the person considered to have done the most for the advancement of underwater sports in Australia during the previous twelve months. A long term resident of Inverloch in South Eastern Victoria, Steve was recognised for his contribution to Underwater Hockey and especially for his junior development work.

Steve’s association with the sport goes back to the opening of the Wonthaggi indoor pool in 1980. As a member of the South Gippsland Dive Club and the South Eastern Area Board Rider’s Club he suggested that the two clubs play one another in a game of Underwater Hockey. He played with the eventual victors of that foundation game, the Board Riders team.

After more than thirty years he is still actively involved. In that time he has served as President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Wonthaggi Underwater Hockey club.

Steve Dunn receives the 2013 Beau Beere Award.

The award was announced by the Federal President of the Australian Underwater Federation, Graham Henderson, who acknowledged Steve’s long and dedicated service, “He has held numerous administrative positions over the years along with huge input into the promotion of juniors into the Club and sport.”

“Steve is to be congratulated for all his achievements. His nomination showed the respect, consideration and esteem with which he is held,” said Mr Henderson.

Steve was presented his award at a function held at the Wonthaggi pool after the final club game for the year. The current president of the Wonthaggi Underwater Hockey club, Kevin Chisholm, said it was well-deserved recognition, “It is great to see Steve being acknowledged at a national level. He has had an enormous influence sport of Underwater Hockey, not just here in the local area but across Victoria and Australia.”

“Steve’s enduring legacy is getting so many kids involved. He had a huge influence on my development within the sport and literally hundreds of people have played Underwater Hockey as a result of his passion. He teaches young kids about the importance of commitment and discipline. He instils a respect for fair play in everyone he teaches,” said Mr. Chisholm.

After all these years, Steve’s passion for Underwater Hockey hasn’t waned. Week after week, he attends the regular Thursday night session at the Wonthaggi pool. There, he puts the junior players through their paces before joining the adults for their game. Steve is the only foundation member still actively involved in the club.

When deliberating the nominations the federal board considered the future effects of the contribution made to the sport and the benefit to others achieved through nominee’s activities. Steve’s hard work certainly fulfils both criteria. His efforts have helped Wonthaggi become one of the most successful clubs in Victoria and the biggest producer of junior players in the state. Over the years dozens players have gone on to represent Victoria and Australia.

Not content with his contribution to date, Steve is busy preparing another crop of junior players who will travel to the Gold Coast in late January. There, they will compete in the Australian National Championships and Underwater Hockey will continue to benefit from Steve’s passion and dedication.

Changes to the UHA Committee

It has been a big year for Underwater Hockey in Australia. The year kicked off with a hugely successful National Championships in Hobart. The tournament attracted more than 200 participants across six divisions and included the introduction of an U15 junior division.

Our representative teams also enjoyed some fantastic results at the 18th CMAS Underwater Hockey World Championships in Eger, Hungary in August. With 84 athletes and more than ten support staff it was the largest contingent Australia has ever sent to an international Underwater Hockey tournament. All seven Australian teams progressed through to the semi-final stage and four teams collected medals. The Master’s Men and Master’s Women were crowned World Champions after winning their respective finals. The U23 Men collected silver while the Elite Men overcame a heart breaking semi-final loss to France (2-1 after extra time) to collect bronze with a 7-1 win over Great Britain. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of the coaches and administrative staff who attended the competition. In particular, Sandra Milner and Jane Gilligan did an amazing job coordinating managing the teams. I would also like to acknowledge the work of our junior team chaperones, Ben and Laura , their work is much appreciated by the UHA committee and the players who traveled. Also a massive thank you to all of the parents and supporters who attended or followed our progress from afar.

On behalf of the UHA and as a player involved on the trip I would also like to express gratitude to the Australian team physios, Nick, Mary-Anne and Lolia, who accompanied us on our trip to Hungary. They did an enormous amount of work on the trip and their knowledge played a vital role in the success that our teams experienced.

Underwater Hockey Australia Annual General Meeting

More recently, the Underwater Hockey Australia AGM saw some substantial changes to the committee. Lena Plambeck (Director of Coaching), Craig Mackenzie (Games Commissioner) and Jodie Miners (Communications Officer) did not re-nominate for their positions. All three made an enormous contribution to the committee and to the betterment of Underwater Hockey here in Australia. They have spent countless hours working within their respective portfolios. Their work will hold the organisation in good stead for the coming years. On the bright side, a new generation of people have stepped up to fill their roles. Nick Martyn is the new Games Commissioner, Nina Barry-Macaulay will fill the Communications Officer role and Angus Sinclair takes the lead on the refereeing portfolio as Director of Refereeing.

I have also decided to step down from the Director role. It has been an interesting and rewarding experience but I feel it is time for a new direction. Unfortunately no nominations were received so the position remains vacant. I will act in the role for the next couple of months so that a suitable replacement can be found.

There have also been some significant changes at State level. Joe Tindal stepped down from his position in South Australia. Joe has made an amazing contribution to the sport in Adelaide. He will be sorely missed.

Next year is looking like an exciting year. Nationals will be held on the Gold Coast in January. Mid-year we will send U19 and U23 teams to New Zealand for Trans Tasmans. We are also looking to hold an Australian club championships in the second half of the year. Hopefully there will be more news on that front shortly.

Please stay safe over the festive season and I look forward to seeing you in the water in 2014.

Fundraiser for typhoon relief fund

The proceeds of the fundraiser

The proceeds of the fundraiser.

Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful on record, destroyed thousands of homes as it tracked across central Philippines before going on to strike Vietnam. Winds of more than 300km/h, flash flooding and landslides have left families without shelter, food and water. Thousands of people are feared dead in the Philippines.

The Australian Underwater Hockey community has a close relationship with our friends from the Philippines. Players from across Australia have attended tournaments in Manila over the past few years. This time last year more than a dozen players attended the post-tournament dive trip on the island of Coron. The island was devastated by the storm.

A fundraiser gathering was held at the the Great Northern Hotel in Carlton North on Saturday 16th of December 2013. About thirty players and friends dropped in for a meal or a drink. A total of $780 was raised and will be donated to the Red Cross’ Typhoon Haiyan Appeal.

Thank you to Tim Helm for donating a range of super delicious preserves for the raffle and to all of those that donated.
