Calling all Australian Women’s Masters players

Expressions of interest are sought to fill a position on the Australian Masters Woman’s Team that will compete in the CMAS Underwater Hockey World Championships in Quebec 15th-28th July.

Interested players will be assessed based on their postal application and previous experiences. The panel of selectors includes Kirsteen Reid, Eden Brown and Bronwyn Mackenzie.

Criteria:

1) Has Worlds experience at either Elite or Masters level or is already suitably equipped to compete at that level;
2) Proven fitness and a commitment to developing level of fitness in the next two months;
3) Is available to attend both training camps prior to worlds (Homebush: 29th June to 1st July & Quebec 15th – 19th July);
3) Ability to follow instructions and specific direction and adapt to the team plan accordingly;
4) Can make all past and current player payments at the time of selection;

Due to time constraints and uniform and player payment schedules expression of interest must be received by Sunday 13th May.

Calling Australian Men’s Masters players

Due to player injury concerns, Underwater Hockey Australia is calling for nominations from players interested in joining the Australian Men’s Masters team which will contest the 2018 CMAS Worlds in Quebec, Canada from 16-28 July.

One spot is open for selection. Interested players should contact Rees Quilford (0408584 846 or rees@destinationq.com.au) by COB April 28. Interested players will need pay the registration and participation fees immediately.

Nominating players will be assessed for suitability (taking into account fitness, skill level, game awareness and playing history) by a panel of selectors. The team will likely be finalised in early May.

Underwater Hockey Australia is pleased to announce the appointments of Australian Team Coaches and Managers for 2018:

Information for 2018 Australian Elite & Masters Teams

The HSQ (Hockey Subaquatique Québec) is hosting the world’s best underwater hockey players at “the Sports and Physical Education Pavilion Pool (Pavillon d’éducation physique et des sports (PEPS) pool), located at the heart of Université Laval campus, Quebec City, Province of Quebec, Canada” from 19-28 July 2018.

Information is available online and on facebook.

The Australian Elite teams have booked a pre-competition camp 14-17th July and so must arrive by 13th July. The Masters teams will need to arrive by 18th July to attend the opening ceremony.

The Hotel Universel has been booked for all teams and support staff for 16 nights (13-29 July), and is 5 minutes walk to the pool.

SELECTIONS

In order to be eligible to be selected in any team players must:

Pay a $600 deposit by 8th Jan 2018 to:

The deposit is vital so we can pay for accommodation and competition fees (due early Feb 2018)

Players not selected will be refunded their deposit (minus any costs associated with attended training camps).

Selection for all teams will be held in Perth following the Nationals Finals on Saturday afternoon 13th Jan.

Elite teams will have compulsory training on Sunday afternoon (12-6pm) 14 January 2018 and Monday morning (8-12pm) 15 January 2018.

PROVISIONAL BUDGET

At this stage elite player’s total individual costs are estimated to be around $5,500 including airfares, training camps, accommodation, competition fees, car hire and uniforms. This is only approximate at this stage and dependent on exchange rates and actual costs. Masters costs are estimated to be around $1,000 less also depending on arrival time in Quebec. Airfares to training .camps will be equalised as occurred in 2017.

Payment can be organised via ASF but the payment schedule must be met and will be reimbursed when the ASF monies are received. More information will be sent to those interested.

We will send out more information after the Nationals to those that have been selected.

We will also use google forms to gather information regarding uniforms, flight details and accommodation requirements as planning develops.

Eden Brown named as Beau Bere Award recipient

Eden Brown has been announced as the newest recipient of the AUF’s Beau Bere Award.

Eden was recognized for her contribution to underwater hockey in New South Wales, Victoria and Australia at both the development and representative level.

In her local club, the University of Wollongong UWH club, she often runs training sessions for the promising junior athletes that attend club nights. She has been selected as the chaperone for the NSW U19s boy’s and girl’s teams attending nationals on the Gold Coast in January 2017.

Starting playing in Drouin, Victoria, Eden has gone on to achieve numerous state and national selections. She has been a valuable representative for the NSW and Victorian Elite Women’s teams for many years. In recent years, she helped the NSW team to 4 consecutive grand finals, coming away with silver on each occasion. Eden was also awarded the MVP award in a losing side in the 2017 year’s Elite Women’s final at Nationals on the Gold Coast.

Her representative honours also extend to the international stage. Eden first represented Australia at the World Championships in Paris in 1994. She is still participating at that level having won gold in the Masters Women’s division at the 2016 World Championships in Stellenbosch, South Africa in March. That feat was achieved while coaching the Australian Elite women’s team.

The AUF noted that Eden’s attributes in both playing and developing the game made her an ideal candidate for the AUF Beau Bere Award.

Rhys Milburn named AUF Sportsperson of the year

West Australian underwater hockey and underwater rugby player Rhys Milburn was recently named AUF Sportsperson of the year.

Rhys Milburn in action at the 2016 CMAS World Underwater Hockey Championships.

Rhys was recognised as a member of the WA state team for underwater hockey and underwater rugby that won both national championships. Winning the national rugby championships was particularly meritorious given that it was only the second competition WA had entered.

Rhys was a key member in the Australian Underwater Hockey team that won the World Championship in April 2016 in Stellenbosch South Africa.

Applications for 2018-19 Australian Junior Team Coaches & Managers

Underwater Hockey Australia (UHA) is seeking applications for Australian Junior Team Coaches & Managers for 2018-19.

This will include participation in the CMAS Age Group World Championships scheduled for Sheffield, England in 2019 and the 2018 Trans-Tasman Championship to be held in Wellington, New Zealand.

Interested parties should complete the UHA Coach / Manager Application Form.

Applications for should be submitted by COB November 5th.

Australian Elite Team selection criteria

The athlete Selection Criteria for the Elite Australian Underwater Hockey teams that will participate in the 2018 CMAS World Championships held in Vancover, Canada is now available.
